About the Organization
Catholic Relief Services is the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States. U.S. bishops founded it in 1943 to help survivors of World War II, and it now reaches people in dozens of countries. Its mission is to assist people who are impoverished or disadvantaged overseas, in the spirit of Catholic social teaching and the dignity of each person.
Although the agency is Catholic, it says it serves people based on need, without regard to race, religion, or ethnicity. Work includes emergency relief and longer development, while outreach in the United States invites Catholics to act in solidarity with people who are suffering.
