Equal Justice Initiative
Legal representation for marginalized groups
About the Organization
The Equal Justice Initiative works to end mass incarceration, excessive punishment, and racial inequality in the United States. Its legal and public education work covers the death penalty, children sentenced in the adult system, wrongful convictions, and harsh prison conditions. It also documents the legacy of slavery, lynching, and segregation, including through community remembrance projects.
EJI combines courtroom advocacy with museums and reports so the history behind present-day punishment is harder to ignore. The aim is a justice system that is less willing to discard people.
