The Innocence Project
Exonerates the wrongly convicted
About the Organization
The Innocence Project, founded in 1992 by Peter Neufeld and Barry Scheck, works to free people who were wrongfully convicted and to reform the systems that produce those convictions. Its public issues include eyewitness misidentification, false confessions, unreliable forensics, official misconduct, and inadequate defense. Restoring freedom is paired with changing the rules that make errors likely.
The organization publishes cases and research and invites the public to support policy change. It presents exoneration as both a rescue for an individual and evidence that criminal justice practices need to change.
